Photos of newly elected members of the Abu Dhabi Legislative Body (Temagan) in Abu Dhabi Friday, March 30, 2007
If you want to see the photos of the newly elected members of the Abu Dhabi Legislative Body, you are invited to click here.

As far as we know, this is the first time that photos of Temagan members are circulated through official announcement. It is an interesting move and shows understanding for the power of visual contact.

One final comment: More than seeing the photographs, we are interested to know what these people have done in the past for the Community and (even more important) what they are planning to do in the ... near future.

In the UAE for more than 4 years Tuesday, March 27, 2007
I am Armenian Orthodox from Iraq, Baghdad 33 years working in Engineering Consulting company called ARC International. I have been around 4 years and half in the UAE, interested in computer graphics which is my profession now after I graduated from Baghdad University, Eng. Mech. Department.

I am aware of Azad-hye which I visit from time to time. When I found your mail in my mail box I was interested to join. I used to go to all the Armenian clubs in Baghdad, but unfortunatly, still having problems with Armenian Language which keeps me somehow away.

Thanks again wish you have a nice day.

Best regards.

Comment on: Sharjah-Dubai Armenians express views on community issues Tuesday, March 27, 2007
We received the following comment by Nishan Basmajian on the subject: Sharjah-Dubai Armenians express views on community issues

DEAR SEBOUH MANJIKIAN,

I READ YOUR INTERVIEW IN THE WEBSITE OF AZAD HYE. WELL DONE!

YOU HAVE AN AGENDA FOR THE COMING FOUR YEARS, A PLAN. THIS SHOULD BE THE APPROACH AND THE ATTITUDE OF ANY ARMENIAN LEADER. THE SUBJECTS YOU HAVE TACKLED ARE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE, I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON SOME POINTS:

*THE ARMENIAN DAILY SCHOOL: I AM CONFIDENT THAT YOU WILL GIVE THE REQUIRED IMPORTANCE TO THIS MATTER. THIS SHOULD NOT BE POSTPONED ANY FURTHER. THE DAILY SCHOOL HAS BEEN A SUBJECT WHICH YOU AND I HAVE DISCUSSED IN SO MANY OCCASIONS DURING THE LAST 6 YEARS. TIME AND  OPPORTUNITY HAVE COME. I AM CONFIDENT THAT YOU ARE A SINCERE BELIEVER IN EDUCATION AND A RESONSIBLE PERSON. YOU HAVE TO PUT ALL YOUR WEIGHT TO MAKE THIS NOBLE PROJECT A SUCCESS. I CAN SEE A LOT OF ENTHUSIASM IN PARENTS AND CHILDREN. YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES SHOULD NOT DISAPPOINT THEM . I WISH TO SEE THE ARMENIAN DAILY SCHOOL OPENING ITS DOORS TO ITS CHILDREN IN FALL 2007!

*YOU WANT TO SEE THE RESCUCITATION OF THE PERIODICAL "SHEPOR". IT WAS MEANT TO SERVE AS A PUBLICATION WHERE ARMENIAN YOUTH COULD EXPRESS ITS VIEWS, THROUGH WHICH THE COUNCIL COULD MAKE ITS VOICE HEARD TO THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. POOR SHEPOR, IT WAS DEGRADED AND HAD BEEN TRANSFORMED TO "SOULICH"...  NOW IT IS A DUMB INSTRUMENT... YES, SEBOUH, IT HAS TO BE REVIVED. IT IS YOUR AND YOUR COLLEAGUES DUTY TO PERSUE THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY!

*YOU ARE CONCERNED  IN MODERENIZATION OF THE CONSTITUTION. WHY NOT! BUT , FRANKLY SPEAKING, ALTHOUGH IT IS IMPORTANT BUT IT IS NOT PRIORITY IF YOU WANT MY OPINION. FOR ME PRIORITY IS TO KILL THE INDIFFERENCE OF THE YOUTH IN PARTICULAR AND THE AVERAGE ARMENIAN LIVING IN UAE, IN GENERAL. YOUTH IS NOT INDIFFERENT, WE MAKE THEM INDIFFERENT. YOU, SEBOUH , HAVE ALWAYS LEAD BY EXAMPLE, YOU HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY TOGETHER WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES ,THE COUNCIL THAT YOU ARE GOING TO ELECT AND THE SUB COMMITTEES THAT THE COUNCIL IS GOING TO APPOINT. LET US STOP BLAMING OTHERS FOR INDIFFERENCE TO JUSTIFY OUR INDIFFERENCE TOWARDS YOUTH. IT IS TIME TO TURN UP THE SLEEVES!

*I WISH YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES SUCCESS. WE HAVE A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY  IN THE UAE. THEIR MEMBERS NEED CARE. DO NOT LET THEM FEEL LIKE ORPHANS FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! THEY DO NOT DESERVE THAT!

*MY AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH FROM YOU. DO NOT DISAPPOINT US.

STRENGTH AND COURAGE TO ALL OF YOU!

NISHAN

Sharjah-Dubai Armenians express views on community issues Thursday, March 22, 2007
Members of the Electoral Committee confirm the results
Few weeks ago Sharjah-Dubai Armenians elected their Legislative Council, which will govern the community life for the coming four years. The time is ripe for changes.

In the 1990s members of the Community were involved in a very noble mission: the building of the Church. This great mission was fulfilled in 1998 and a Church complex (named after Saint Gregory the Illuminator) with weekly school facilities turned into reality. Armenians in the UAE had for the first time a place where they could call their "own".

This was followed with the excitement and jubilation of establishing the Embassy of Armenia in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The Armenian Community in Sharjah-Dubai supported this mission morally and financially. The official ceremony of the opening of the Embassy in Abu Dhabi (September 2000) was an important milestone. Two years later, in April 2002, President Robert Kocharian visited the UAE, while the excitement scored a new height. During this period several Ministers visited the UAE rekindling public attention towards Armenian issues.

The elections for the 3rd legislative period (December 2002) seemed very encouraging with the participation of more than 500 members in the United Arab Emirates. The competitions in both Abu Dhabi and Sharjah-Dubai were fierce and some mishaps were recorded, with the result that some Armenians were displeased and others felt the elections were meaningless. A less troublesome elections took place this year, but with an exceedingly shrinking participation from the public. The re-election of the same personalities to the Legislative posts created mixed feelings.

Azad-Hye had the following interviews with several Armenians residing in Sharjah-Dubai.

Hye Lounge Mini Survey Wednesday, March 21, 2007
From: Hye Lounge [mailto:hyelounge@hotmail.com]
Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2007 3:06 PM
Dear Everyone,

Within a week, more then 95 people answered the Hye Lounge e-mail with great enthusiasm. Some other people asked for more specific questions about Hye Lounge, who? Why? When? Etc.

Well Maybe we should one more time describe this little project, it is very simple and transparent. Hye Lounge's objective is to gather Armenians informally around a drink so that people that do not have the chance to be with Armenians have that opportunity. It has nothing to do with politics or anything like that, it is simply a Lounge.

Everybody is welcome, this is the main idea.

We are planning to do a first Hye Lounge gathering in mid April, as a lot of you are asking for it. To be able to better understand you we would like to have your answers to these following questions:

- Would you prefer to have Hye Lounge on a week day evening (Sunday, Monday, etc.) or on a weekend evening (Thursday, Friday)?

- Could you please indicate your age bracket: 20-25; 25-30; 30-35; 35-40; 40-45; over 45?

- What is your occupation? (Job, company, other activities?)

- What are your expectations from Hye Lounge? (i.e. Business Networking; New Friends; Listen to music with a drink, be able to share ideas or projects with others..)

- How often would you like to meet? Monthly, weekly, semi-annually?

- Would 9:00 pm be a good time for you? (For a Dubai based Lounge)

Please, take a couple of minutes to answer these questions. This is done to better plan the gatherings for you.

Thank you in Advance, and see you all very soon.

Hye Lounge.

Nishan Basmajian writes an open letter to his readers on the occasion of the announcement of the year 2007 as the year of the Armenian language.

Nishan highlights the noble meaning of this occasion and encourages - in a convincing way - the readers to take care of their language and try to keep it intact and unaffected by the waves of change.

A language stays in its best form by constant attention. Let us use this opportunity to renew the commitment to our beautiful language.
