Comments on article: Sebouh Armenagian: We are launching the online radio on this symbolic day as a sign of revival.

This is great news. We have Vana Tzayn that is broadcasting online, from Lebanon (www.voiceofvan.net). Another radio station that has recently been established called Radio Sevan. They have a website, and most probably they have plans to broadcast online (http://www.radiosevan.com/).

Of course, there is a rare online radion station, which is the Armenian Christian Internet Radio (http://bashde.org).

Lena Shamamian in the UAE Sunday, April 27, 2008

Lena Shamamian, Syrian-Armenian singer

Lena Shamamian and her band perform in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain as part of the Syrian Cultural Week in the UAE.

Abu Dhabi: 29 April 2008 and 02 May 2008 (National Theatre, 08:30pm).

Al Ain: 01 May 2008 (Hilton Al Ain, 08:30pm)

Lena Shamamian is a young Syrian-Armenian singer, who has produced in 2006 her first CD album, made up of Arabic traditional songs with modern flavor (see sample below).

Shamamian is a graduate of Aleppo Institute of Music and the Higher Institute of Music in DamascusIn September 2006, together with colleague Basel Rajjoub, she won the Radio Monte-Carlo 1st Musical Prize, at a contest in Amman, Jordan. The event was sponsored by the European Commission. Soon afterwards Shamamian and Rajjoub completed a tour of European cities and performed in the Arab World Institute in Paris on 17 October 2006, under the guidance of maestro Saoud Masi.

Shamamian has worked on several Arabic traditional songs (Ya Mahla el-Fouseha, Alrouzana, Hal Asmar Elloan, Ya Mayla Al'Ghousn, Bali Ma'ak, etc.) preserving the original identity of these songs and re-producing them with a new style.

In an interview with Arab newspaper Asharq Alawsat (11 October 2006) Shamamian affirms "everything around us is in constant change, we cannot avoid progress. What I aspire is to achieve harmony between the two cultures in an environment of mutual exchange, without undermining the original identity of the oriental music, which in fact fascinates me. This music depends highly on rhythm, while the western music depends mainly on musical notes. I aim at integrating both styles in a scientific way" (see sample of her song below).

Shamamian has managed to create a new formula after fusing jazz, Armenian and classical western music and pouring all these elements into an oriental musical frame.

Comment on article: Sebouh Armenagian: We are launching the online radio on this symbolic day as a sign of revival

Dear organizers of Azad-Hye radio station,

It was a real delight to hear about an Armenian Radio station launching from UAE and based on volunteer work, I really appreciate it.

I am sure that its not easy to accomplish such a project specially all of you are committed to your own businesses and the Radio requires so much time and work.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the amazing job you did and its really meant a lot to launch it today on 24th of April, apparently despite that the Turkish government tries to deny the existence of creative and strong nation like the ARMENIANS, we will still survive and we will stay Armenian and listen to Armenian music even in the heart of the Arabian desert.

Comment on article: 9th anniversary of the Armenian Church in Sharjah

Posted by Hrant on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Can anyone give me the exact address / location of the Church in Sharjah? I visited there from Yerevan and heard about the Church, but no one could tell me where it was. I'd like to see it next time I go to UAE. Is there a Church in Dubai or Abu Dabai?

Azad-Hye response: You can find the location of the Armenian Church in Sharjah and information about the Armenian Community in the UAE at this link

We hope that during your next visit you will achieve your goal and visit the Community Center in Sharjah.

There is no Armenian Church in Dubai. The Armenians of Dubai use Sharjah facitilites, although it is getting more difficult for them - due to the excessive traffic between the two Emirates - to follow Armenian events in Sharjah.

Abu Dhabi Armenians use the Catholic Church (Saint Joseph) or the Orthodox Church (Saint Nicholaos) for the Armenian religious services, conducted by the same UAE pastor (Rev. Aram Deyirmendjian).

Dear Sebouh, Hrach, Norair and Carlos,

Any new venture/business or idea that is contributing to the Armenian cause deserves to be praised especially when this is done on a voluntary basis,   therefore, I and many others wish you every success in your new project. I hope that this radio will reach many Armenian desk/laptops and also homes across the whole of Middle East through radio waves in near future and will become the Voice of Armenia in this region.

Whilst we often receive messages, community news through various electronic communication channels, I hope that the leaders (Council of the Armenian Community, The Church, Armenian Embassy) of our respective communities will endorse (as this is done for the benefit of our community) and use this new tool of communication to get closer to us.

For a long time Azad-Hye website has been a source of unbiased, reliable and valuable information which has brought our community together and I hope that the new radio will follow suit.

Good Luck and Best wishes,

Socrat Arakelyan, Dubai.

p.s. I will be happy to provide you with all kinds of Armenian music (ranging from heartfelt love songs to rabiz :)) and other material if required.

Dear all Armenians,

First of all thank you for all your comments, these will cherish us a lot to do our job in a perfect way.

Our aim is to be distinguished from other 24 hours radio stations presenting good quality Armenian Music with its different genres from Armenian Liturgy to today's contemporary music besides to brodcast other cultural and educational materials in order to provide a quality Armenian atmosphere and avoid what all other online radio stations do.

This is a huge job to do but I believe that we can do it step by step and with the help of all of you.

Enjoy Azad Hye Radio,

Diocese’s legislative body meets in Kuwait Friday, April 04, 2008

The agenda of the meeting remains unknown

The 14th annual session of the Legislative Body of the Armenian Diocese of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf Countries will convene in Kuwait from 10-12 April 2008.

Half of the 18 laymen members of the Body are from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, while the rest are from Kuwait. The members of the Legislative Body are elected every four years. Azad-Hye has covered the last elections extensively (see report here).

Traditionally, only 10% of the Armenian population in the voting age takes part in the above elections (no real research has been conducted to find out the reason behind this phenomenon, which apparently serves the existing “eternal” officeholders). It is not strange therefore that the Legislative Body lacks the support of a real popular base. Read more ...
