Sharjah: Traditional Armenian fire festival (12 February 2009) Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Diarnentarch

Traditional Armenian fire festival: Diarnentarach / Tiarnendarach

This very old Armenian feast dates back to pagan times and is celebrated on 14 February, 40 days after the Armenian Christmas.

The main ceremony is a bonfire, symbolizing the coming of spring, the youth, the love, the fertility, the blessing of newly married couples. The fire symbolizes the light, the warmth, the joy and also the protector against evil.

Usually the young people would light fire in the yard. People gather around the fire and young couples jump through the fire, followed by children and adults. After the fire is extinguished, eating, dancing and party begin.

Diarnentarch will be celebrated on Thursday, 12th February 2009, at 7.00 - 8.30 pm, in St Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in Sharjah.

Armenian Ohannesian school children also will be involved in the celebrations. On the same evening (12 February 2009) from 06:00 - 09:30 they will participate in games and extra-curriculum activities inside the community center and when time comes for the fire festivities they will be invited to play their part. They will be throwing old and useless socks and hats onto the fire.

Parents will have the chance to buy traditional Armenian foodstuff on display in the church yard.

Sergey Khachatryan performs in Abu Dhabi Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Gemma Champ published a reveiw in Abu Dhabi's daily ("The National", 12 January 2009) on Maxim Shostakovich's recent musical event in Abu Dhabi. In the review Champ says:

"The incredibly young Sergey Khachatryan is, at 23, a formidable talent, with a mastery of bowing, precision of fingering and perfection of pitch that astounds the listener. The silvery tone of his 1708 Stradivarius perfectly suits his agile style, while still giving him the tonal depth needed for sawing out the folky dance melodies of the second movement.

Those ethereal, delicate harmonics of the cadenza in the first movement, the deftly managed double-stopping that looked oh-so easy in his hands and the sweet, wistful tone in the slower passages were all charmingly achieved."

Armenian telephone Directory 2009 Tuesday, January 13, 2009

With great pleasure we received the announcement about republishing the Armenian Directory of Dubai and Northern Emirates this year.

The announcement (see below) says that the publication will take place “shortly”. We hope that there is one meaning for this word. Last time the data gathering for the same purpose took several months, while the publishing needed more than one year. By the time the end user was able to use the Directory of 2006, the information there were heavily outdated.

On organizational level the initial signs for the new edition do not look good. For example, in the original announcement circulated today (see PDF format here), the fax number in the English version is not correct. Even if rectified with subsequent emails, there still would be individuals who will be sending their data to the wrong number. Read more

Yervant Zorian: The Armenian Virtual College is scheduled to launch in January 2009 Friday, January 09, 2009

Education is one of the first examples where we can use modern technologies. If we cannot secure the Armenian school physically, we can have it virtually.

On Friday 19th of December 2008, the Armenian Community Hall in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) hosted a presentation by Dr. Yervant Zorian, Member of Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Central Board of Directors and President of AGBU Virtual College, on the subject of "The Armenian Virtual College".

Azad-Hye took advantage of Dr. Zorian's visit to Sharjah and had the following interview with the distinguished guest.  Read the interview here.

Do we need to publish community annual reports? Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Azad-Hye Special

Annual reports of community life are important research and decision making tools. They enable us to stay up to date on community's yearly outlook, understand the present situation and make comparisons with past tracks. They help us in taking decisions about the future course of events.

It will be very good if we as a community start adopting the practice of preparing annual reports of community life with the aim of making them accessible to the public. It is not enough to prepare reports for close meetings and then shelve them or throw them in the archives, thus making them useful for future researchers only.

The content of community annual reports should be the possession of the public. Through these reports we can know how well the community was doing in the past year, not only on financial level, which is easy to quantify, but also on moral and other stands (educational, social, communicative etc.), which need more expertise to assess. Two individuals from the UAE support 'Sponsor an Article' project Saturday, January 03, 2009

Hratch Brunsuzian and Shakeh Grogan have vowed to support the "Sponsor an Article" project, which aims at enriching Azad-Hye with creative and translated articles, in three language (English, Armenian and Arabic), with special emphasis on Armenian.

Read more about the project here.

Until today Hratch Brunsuzian has sponsored the following articles:

1) Zohrab the royal photographer

2) Monument of Gratitude to Arabs

3) Call to support the fundraising campaign for the Monument of Gratitude to Arabs

4) Garo Arslanian: My true hope is to find the same kind of eagerness to read and write in my students

Shakeh Grogan has sponsored the following articles:

1) Reverend Haroutioun Selimian elected president of the Armenian Evangelical World Council

2) Haroutioun Tenguerian: The roots are talking

3) A well known name in all Armenian households: Arevig

4) Shoghagat Apartian: my first experiment was to arrange Gomidas songs to jazz

Their commitment will continue throughout 2009.

Since its beginning in 2003, Azad-Hye has produced thousands of pages in three languages English, Armenian and Arabic.

The main language in use is English, while several articles appear also in Armenian. The Arabic website (www.azad-hye.org) enjoys the status of a complete website.

There is always a need to reward journalists and writers. By doing so we can guarantee the creation of a higher quality of written material. There is also a need to make articles accessible in more than one of the above mentioned languages. Posting articles in Armenian is particularly an important duty.

We hope that one day the Armenian National Councils in the UAE understand our concerns and come forward with their support in this important task.

The idea behind the Sponsor an Article project is to find people who can sponsor writing and translating articles.

Be a sponsor by writing to post@azad-hye.com
