Beirut Conference 2009Armenia: Lest We Forget!

By Anand Sagar

Nothing is more tragic than a lack of ‘historical consciousness’ as the Armenians know only too well and as was highlighted rather convincingly during a recent academic conference in Beirut - the first of its kind in the Middle East.

The main thrust of the conference, organised by the Armenian National Committee of the Middle East (ANCME) in collaboration with Beirut’s Haigazian University, was to ensure that the Armenian Genocide is not dismissed as a ‘forgotten genocide’. And that, because an estimated 1.5 million Armenian citizens of the former Ottoman Empire (presently Turkey) had lost their lives in the ‘Holocaust’ - during and just after the World War I. And because, any tragedy of this nature and on this scale must never be reduced to a mere obscure footnote in history. Read more

Azeri community leader in UAE misrepresents facts related to the Armenians Friday, September 04, 2009

In a rather strange interview with Day.AZ Azeri information website, Mr. Samir Iman, the head of the Azerbaijani community in the United Arab Emirates, dedicated more than half of his time to talk about the Armenian community (instead of talking about his own community), providing details about the number of Armenians in the country, where they meet and what they do, where they originally come from and at what level is their knowledge of Arabic language, etc.

Following this introduction Mr. Iman expressed his view that "despite the relatively large number of Armenians, they cannot do anything openly or stage any propaganda ... we can say that the Armenian diaspora in the UAE is dead and is hardly felt here". Full text

Musaffah industrial zone in Abu Dhabi to get 'Art Hub' Friday, August 28, 2009

Linda StephanianBy Matt Kwong

A creative arts centre in the Musaffah industrial zone is expected to ease the capital’s shortage of cheap studio space for emerging artists.

Groundwork has already begun on the 650-square-metre warehouse dubbed the Art Hub, which is due to open next year and is the brainchild of Tini Meyer.

Linda Stephanian, 28, an Armenian-Iranian sculptress and the manager of the Ghaf Art Gallery, has been waiting for something like the Art Hub since her arrival in Abu Dhabi in 2006.

Most of her artist friends, she said, were forced to make room to work in their homes. Ms Stephanian works with air-hardening clay and papier-mâché in her kitchen and says the restricted space limits the scale of her creations.

“My works are mostly small because of the space. If I have bigger space, I’ll go for bigger sculptures.”

Ms Stephanian has looked for space in Musaffah before, but could not find anything smaller than a whole warehouse.

“I couldn’t find a small space, but if [Art Hub] is affordable, I would definitely be looking for a studio there,” she said. “I think it will be really well accepted here since I know maybe eight or 10 artists here who can’t find affordable studio space to rent.”

Armenia and UAE discuss parliamentary relations Friday, August 28, 2009

Ambassador Melikian and Al GhurairSpeaker of the UAE Federal National Council (FNC) Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair and the Armenian ambassador to UAE Vahagn Melikian discussed on 25 August 2009 ways for enhancing relations and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of parliamentary affairs.

They also reviewed the mechanisms that guarantee the development of relations between UAE and Armenia in the avenues of tourism and investment by tapping the vast resources of both countries in these sectors.

Vahagn Melikyan conveyed Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair an invitation of the Speaker of Armenia’s parliament Hovik Abrahamyan to visit Armenia.

The officials touched upon the formation of parliamentary friendship groups, as well as deepening the bilateral relations. The Armenian diplomat presented Al Ghurair the main directions of foreign and regional policy of Armenia.

Al Ghurair stressed the interest of UAE in the development of multilateral relations with Armenia and the need to take effective steps in this direction. He shed light on the general elections made to the FNC in 2006 and the recent constitutional amendments, which gave the parliament more powers.

Articles on nutrition and suggestion about nutrition course in Sharjah Friday, August 14, 2009

Mrs. Maro Nigoghosian has been living in the United Arab Emirates for several years. She is an expert in nutrition and author of several books and many articles on mental and physical well being and healthy lifestyle.

In modern times, nutrition subjects are very important, especially after experiments showed strong relationship between nutrition and behavior patterns like aggression and psychological situations like depression.

We believe that there is a great need to educate our community members on such topics, for the benefit of the individuals themselves and the society in general. After all, a healthy individual will be the core of a happy and balanced family.

In a letter to the Executive Council (Azkayin Varchoutyoun) we have taken the initiative to suggest inviting Nigoghosian for a series of lectures or workshop, hoping that the Council will look into the matter favorably.

See letter to the Executive Council here (PDF format, 1 page, in Armenian)

Nutrition articles by Maro Nighogosian are available here (more articles to be added in the future).
