News > Pan-Armenian News (Traditional Parties) > Catholicos Aram meets with leaders of three Armenian traditional parties
The recent political developments in Armenia - Turkey relations and the signing of the two Protocols aiming at the possible normalization of the relations (if the Protocols were ratified by the Parliaments of both countries in the coming period), led to intensive consultations between the leading Armenian parties and other establishments in the Diaspora.
The opposition against the signing of the Protocols was clearly expressed by the traditional Armenian parties and their followers during President Serzh Sargsyan's tour to several cities with large Diaspora population, immediately before their signing. The hastily arranged tour did not yield the expected results and many in the Diaspora remained skeptical about the process of developing normal relations with Turkey prior to the recognition of the Genocide. Although the Armenian officials insist there are no preconditions in the signed Protocols, the continuous announcements made by Turkish officials do not enhance this viewpoint.
In this alarmed atmosphere, Catholicos of Cilicia Aram I had a series of meetings with the leaders of the three known Armenian traditional parties: Ramgavar, Hunchak and Dashnaktsutyun.
On 05 October 2009, the Central Committee of the Ramgavar Azadagan Party, headed by Chairman Mike Kharabian met Aram I in Antelias, Lebanon. Conversations centered around the recent developments in Armenia-Turkey relations and their impact on Armenian Diaspora. The representatives of the Ramgavar Party stated that Armenia should not take decisions regarding Turkey that would undermine the just demands of the Armenian people.
On 19 November 2009, the members of the Central Committee of the Armenian Social Democrat Hunchak Party visited His Holiness Aram I in his office. The Hunchak leaders and the Catholicos discussed the recently signed Protocols and related reactions from the diaspora. Aram I stressed the importance of strengthening Armenia-Diaspora relations, without letting any circumstances to divide our people.
On 24 November 2009, the members of the Bureau of the Dashnak Party (Dashnaktsutyun) with its leader Hrant Markarian visited Catholicos Aram I in Antelias. Their conversations centered on the Armenia-Turkey protocol and strategies to strengthen Armenia-Diaspora relations, as well as means to adopt new approaches in pursuing the just cause of the Armenian people regarding the Genocide.
