Azad-Hye Special

The newly formed Armenian Cultural Club of the American University of Sharjah (AUS) participated on 08 April 2010 in the 12th Annual Global Day Festival, a two-day event that attracts more than 40 thousand visitors, with the involvement of 30 students club, representing the cultural diversity in AUS.

The Global Day was inaugurated by Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, who toured the various pavilions and met with student club members.

Among the countries represented were UAE, Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Lebanon, Palestine, India, Egypt, etc. There were also several organizations representing awareness programs, such as those related to Sharjah Police, Sharjah Red Crescent, the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, etc.

This year’s event was more colourful and exciting with the participation of the Armenian students. The Armenian Cultural Club of AUS was formed earlier this year with the immediate membership of 15 Armenian students and more than 150 AUS and non-AUS members. The Armenian stand at the AUS Spring Club Fair in February 2010 was a first attempt to introduce Armenian cultural to the wider public of AUS students and visitors and to attract new members.

The Armenian Cultural Club aims at "involving the American University of Sharjah with worldwide Armenian historic, present and future factual events and news. Also, uniting the Armenians in the University by different sources of activities and events," according to the Club’s Facebook page.

Previous events in the American University of Sharjah related to the Armenians included "The Cadence Ensemble" dance group from Armenia (2006), Syrian Armenian singer Lena Chamamyan (2008) and the lecture by Aram I Catholicos of Cilicia about the role of religion in modern societies (2009).
