Yervant Zorian: The Armenian Virtual College is scheduled to launch in January 2009
 
 
 
Yervant ZorianOn Friday 19th of December 2008, the Armenian Community Hall in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) hosted a presentation by Dr. Yervant Zorian, Member of Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Central Board of Directors and President of AGBU Virtual College, on the subject of "The Armenian Virtual College".
  
Azad-Hye took advantage of Dr. Zorian's visit to Sharjah and had the following interview with the distinguished guest. 
 
 
Tenth anniversary of the Armenian Church in Sharjah
10th anniversary of Sharjah Armenian Church
Friday 12 December 2008 would be remembered in the history of the Armenian Community in the UAE as the most crowded event in recent times. 

Some 450 people attended the 10th anniversary of the Armenian Apostolic Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church in Sharjah.

From a young man, who used to be a guitar player in a local band, to Jordan's King Hussein's royal photographer, a company and a magazine owner ... meet Zohrab Markerian, a proud Armenian and a proud Jordanian. 
 
 
Zohrab the royal photographerBorn in Amman, Jordan, the son of poor Armenian refugees, Zohrab grew up with his brother and sister in a very humble neighborhood. He lost his father when he was 12 and had to leave school and find a job to improve his living conditions. Thanks to his hard work, he was able to earn a decent living and he succeeded to go up all the way to the royal palace!

Annual charity bazaar in Amman by the Armenian Relief Society
 
Ankineh KouyoumdjianArmenian Relief Society's annual charity bazaar took place in the Society's headquarters in Jabal Ashrafieh, Amman (Jordan) on 27 and 28 November 2008 from 11:00 am - 08:00 pm   

The bazaar included handmade embroidery, handcrafts, ceramics and traditional foods. ;
 
 
Atken Armenian: A life with a meaning

Atken Armenian is no more with us. He passed away in Montreal, Canada, on 26 December 2008 at the age of 64..
 
Atken was born in Cairo, Egypt. He moved to Canada in 1965. In 1992, in the difficult years of Armenia, he and his wife Hasmig took the decision to move to Armenia. For more than ten years Atken was Dean of Extension Studies at the American University of Armenia (AUA). Since its inception in 1992, the Extension Studies program serves as the AUA's principal interface with the community.

In 27 December 2008 issue of English daily "The Independent" (London), known journalist and writer Robert Fisk made the following remark in an opinion-article titled "How can anyone believe there is 'progress' in the Middle East?":
 
By chance, I browsed through Turkish Airlines' in-flight magazine while cruising into Istanbul earlier this month and found an article on the historical Turkish region of Harput. "Asia's natural garden", "a popular holiday resort", the article calls Harput, "where churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary rise next to tombs of the ancestors of Mehmet the Conqueror".

Every summer, the Jazz lovers in Aleppo, gather in the historical citadel to enjoy performances by local and international bands, participating in the annual jazz festival. This August, again, Armenian, Swiss, German, Italian, French and Brazilian notes hit the stages and overwhelmed the audience with the spirit of jazz..
 
28 August 2008 was one of the most remarkable nights of the festival, dubbed as The Armenian Night, when three bands from three different countries performed their best and quenched the thirst of the attendants. The bands were ShoghArt (from Aleppo, Syria), Hekiat (from Switzerland) and Time Report (from Armenia).

Reverend Haroutioun Selimian elected president of the Armenian Evangelical World Council

Evangelical elections

Reverend Haroutioun Selimian, who has been president of the Armenian Evangelical Community in Syria since 2004 is the first Syrian Armenian to receive this position, that he will hold until 2010..

The elections were held at the headquarters of the Armenian Missionary Association of America in New Jersey, USA, in October 2008, in the presence of the five Unions of Armenian evangelical churches, (Near East, France, Armenia Euro-Asia, North America). 
 
 
Serge Bedrossian: I take music seriously and lightly
 
Serge Bedrossian
Serge Bedrossian is an author, composer and interpret, who sings popular songs in different languages: French, English, Armenian and Arabic.
 
His musical style reflects an eventual influence typically Armenian and others: Arabic, Italian, European and American. He is a talented artist, a Baryton-Basse voice very rich and sensual. His presence on the stage impresses his auditors.
