News > Pan-Armenian News > Armenia is not only Yerevan
Raffi Doudaklian has recently visited the village of Pakaran, which has 540 inhabitants and is located about 100 kilometers from the capital Yerevan.
In this village, Doudaklian has witnessed the miserable conditions in which the population lives.
He has met a single mother Marineh and her 5-year-old child Armen, who are struggeling to survive, depending on remittances sent by her brother from Russia.
Armen (or Armenchik as the villager call him) is lucky because he has seen the doctor once in his short lifetime, while his sister and brother have both died due to the lack of medical care.
The situation is grave. "Armenia is not only Yerevan", says Raffi Doudaklian and many others who point to the other side of Armenia.
As Diaspora Armenians, we should not be limited in enjoying and appraising the relatively pleasant aspects of life in Yerevan, but we should go beyond that.
Even in the suburbs of Yerevan you can come across many disturbing scenes, let alone the real stories behind many and many households suffering more or less like Marineh, the inhabitant of not-so-far Pakaran.
