Searching for information on Silifke Armenians who immigrated to Cyprus Friday, August 25, 2006

My name is Alice Kazandjian (maiden name Ayvazian). I was born and raised in Cyprus and now reside in the States. I am 25 years old and I recently read an article on this website titled "Paradoxical Armeno-Turkish" By Alkan Chaglar. I found it so interesting because it linked Armenians in Cyprus to Silifke, Turkey, which is where I'm told by my family we were originally from.

My question is: how can I find out more about Armenians from that area and what happened to them in 1923 in Silifke? (that's when my relatives were exiled to Cyprus).

I apologize if I am contacting the wrong person to help me, but having searched the website for contacts, I couldn't find anyone else's e-mail.

I thank you for your time and appreciate you for even just reading my inquiry.

Arabic keyboards Friday, August 25, 2006

The company where I work has started selling our software in the Middle East, mainly Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

As part of the work we are translating our software to work with Arabic. We now need to supply Arabic language keyboards and overlays for some of the function keys. We would ideally like to source them in Dubai.

Are there any members of this list who can do the work and would be interested in doing so?

If so please contact me on my work email souren@mettoni.com.

A film about Alma Johansson (1881-1974) Wednesday, August 16, 2006

Armenpress reports on 16 August 2006 that the shootings of a feature film about great humanitarian Alma Johansson will launch in the spring 2007.

Johansson has worked in one of the children's houses in Western Armenia during the Genocide. The film is based on the biographic notes of Alma Johansson, which are being translated at present from Swedish as well as on the recollections of her granddaughter, who is at present a human rights' defender at the Council of Europe.

The film will be shot in Armenia, Sweden and Austria and will most probably be in Swedish.

Read Azad-Hye report on the occasion of the visit of a group of Swedish Armenians to the tomb of Alma Johannson in 2005.

Back to Qatar Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you for all the emails of solidarity and support you send to me while I was on "holiday" in Lebanon.

I am back to qatar now and resumed work.

I arrived here last Saturday, after spending the friday night in Damascus where I reached via Tripoli and Homs. Initially, I had scheduled to leave lebanon on friday morning via the same route. Luckily the extra flight of friday afternoon got cancelled and we were able to avoid the friday morning escalations when "they" bombed that same highway on five different bridges.

On lighter side of things and in order to keep my sanity in these difficult times, I decided to express myself and started a blog on MSN space. As they say, living is sharing.

Here is the address http://sakollo.spaces.live.com Hope you like it.

looking forward to read your views and comments.

Many blessings,

Armenian Dramatic Arts Alliance (ADAA) Wednesday, August 09, 2006

"It's time our stories are told"

Since our inception a few months ago, we have worked tirelessly digitizing the oral histories from the Armenian Library Museum of America (ALMA), which have been stored there for thirty years and now they appear on our website.

Even further, we are sponsoring an annual $10,000 writing competition in which we are encouraging writers to use these oral histories as their inspiration.

We are also working on Project Save, whose mission is to preserve Armenian history, on the 2007 calendar entitled "Armenian Drama through the ages".

As you know, the Arts are vital to the evolution and preservation of any culture. Our web site, www.armeniandrama.org is currently the most comprehensive Armenian arts web site on line.

Thank you,

Catholicosate of Cilicia thanks the Armenians worldwide for their concern over Lebanon Saturday, July 29, 2006

We received the following e-mail:

His Holiness Aram I instructed me to convey His deep appreciation and warm thanks to all those, who by telephone, by fax or e-mail have expressed their concern and solidarity, and have included in their prayers Lebanon in general, and the Armenian Church and people in particular.

We pray and hope, that with the help of the international community and the people of good will, peace with justice and reconciliation among nations will prevail in the Middle East.

Additional news:

In light of the war situation in Lebanon, His Holiness Aram I issued a pontifical circular to all the dioceses of the Catholicosate of Cilicia, asking them to support Lebanon through the Lebanese embassies in their respective countries and the local leaders of Lebanese Christian and Muslim communities.

All the dioceses expressed support for Lebanon, calling for an immediate and full ceasefire and participating in the humanitarian aid efforts through the Lebanese embassies in their countries, where special committees have been formed for the provision of medicine, food, clothes and other essential material to Lebanon.
